Prerequisites:

Prerequisites: Current enrollment in Chm 132 or special permission.
Synopsis:
The laboratory lectures illustrate practical applications of important chemical principles and methods and emphasize safety procedures. Each Lecture introduces the background for the next experiment to be carried out in the laboratory and discusses procedure and analysis. The laboratory provides an opportunity for students to acquire important hands-on laboratory and analytical skills as experimenters.

Manual and Text:

    ChemLab-2 Laboratory Manual,
    W. U. Schröder, R. W. Kreilick, D. Hickey
    2006
Notes published on this website (Notes)

    S. S. Zumdahl, Chemical Principles, 4th edition, 2002, or later (required).

Assignments:

Students are required to have studied the writeup of the experiment they plan to perform in a laboratory session and submit prelab questions in writing at the beginning of each lab session.
This preparation and knowledge of pertinent safety issues are prerequisite for permission to perform an experiment.
Data are to be taken in assigned laboratory experiments and analyzed. Each student is expected to gather and analyze his/her own data set. Appropriate entries are to be made in bound laboratory log books and authenticated by the corresponding TA. Reports are due the week after each experiment.
Reports:
Reports on experiments and data analysis are due one week after the corresponding experiment has been performed. Submission is electronically and as hardcopy to the corresponding TA. Late submission is penalized by points.

Grading:

The overall grade will be determined as a weighted average of exams, workshop, and laboratory performance. The lab will count for approximately 30 % of the grade.
Completion of laboratory work is required to receive a final grade for the course. Otherwise, a grade of "Incomplete" will be given and the laboratory portion of the course will have to be repeated the following year.
