GOALS

• Provide working knowledge of the fundamental concepts of momentum and momentum methods in simple engineering systems.
• Working knowledge of linear momentum, angular mommentum, momentum-impulse relation, and conservation of momentum for various systems involving collisions.
• Relate momentum change to mass flows. Application to simple engineering systems.
• Combine momentum, energy, and Newton's 2nd law approaches to solve multi-step problems in simple systems.

OBJECTIVES

• Special attention to SI units in dynamics (kg, m, s, N).
• Use of LINEAR MOMENTUM, ANGULAR MOMENTUM, MOMENTUM-IMPULSE, and CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM in simple systems.
• Impulsive forces, maximum force, average force.
• Analysis of elastic, semi-elastic, and plastic collisions in terms of the coefficient of restitution.
• Central and oblique collisions. Conservation of linear momentum, coeff. of restitution. Normal and tangential velosity components.
• Analysis of momentum change in simple mass flows.
• Combination of MOMENTUM, ENERGY, and NEWTON's 2nd LAW to solve more COMPLEX problems.
