ME 121 FALL 2004 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 5 - Oct 15,
2004
DUE IN CLASS (Notice Due
Date)
MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2004
Problems and Reading Assignments are from DYNAMICS
(3rd ED.), Bedford & Fowler (Prentice Hall, 2002)
GOALS
-
Provide working knowledge of the fundamental concepts of
momentum and momentum methods in simple engineering systems.
-
Working knowledge of linear momentum, momentum-impulse relation,
and conservation of linear momentum for various systems involving collisions.
-
Relate momentum change to mass flows. Application to simple
engineering systems.
OBJECTIVES
-
Special attention to SI units in dynamics (kg, m, s, N).
-
Use of LINEAR MOMENTUM, MOMENTUM-IMPULSE, and CONSERVATION
OF MOMENTUM in simple systems.
-
Impulsive forces, maximum force, average force.
-
Analysis of elastic, semi-elastic, and plastic collisions
in terms of the coefficient of restitution.
-
Analysis of momentum change in simple mass flows.
Reading assignment
Chapter 16 (Momentum methods): up to 16.4 included.
Make sure you study especially carefully ALL the solved
examples.
If you want additional practice, note that even-numbered
problems have answers in back of book.
